VoIP-Enabled Services

Voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP), is a technology that allows you to make voice
calls using a broadband Internet connection instead of a regular (or analog) phone
line. Some VoIP services may only allow you to call other people using the same
service, but others may allow you to call anyone who has a telephone number -
including local, long distance, mobile, and international numbers. Also, while some
VoIP services only work over your computer or a special VoIP phone, other
services allow you to use a traditional phone connected to a VoIP adapter.

What kind of equipment do I need

A broadband (high speed Internet) connection is required. This can be through a
cable modem, or high speed services such as DSL or a local area network. A
computer, adaptor, or specialized phone is required. Some VoIP services only
work over your computer or a special VoIP phone, while other services allow
you to use a traditional phone connected to a VoIP adapter. If you use your
computer, you will need some software and an inexpensive microphone. Special
VoIP phones plug directly into your broadband connection and operate largely
like a traditional telephone. If you use a telephone with a VoIP adapter, you'll be
able to dial just as you always have, and the service provider may also provide a
dial tone.

In 2005 the FCC required all VoIP providers to have the equivant to
911, which is E 911. Some companies had to go out of business
because of the cost. Packet8 is one of the first enable E911 back in
2004.When a user gets the service they are registered with E911 and
if you move you have to register again.

If you have a reliable broadband Internet connection, there's no
reason you should still be using traditional landline home phone
service. Broadband phone service is a fast growing alternative to
traditional landline services. Avoid the high costs, regulatory fees
and taxes associated with your typical landline provider. Not all
broadband phone providers are created equal, that's why we carry

VoIP companies call these virtual numbers. They're simply extra numbers that you
can have in other geographic locations. For example, if you have an important client
Los Angeles and you live in Berkeley, you can get a virtual Los Angeles number that
your clients can call and get a hold of you. The benefit to you is that it allows you to
set up a presence, or an office, in other states or cites. Even virtual international
numbers are available.

Voicemail, call forwarding, caller ID and many more features
come standard with most VoIP plans. You'll pay more for these
with regular phone service. Some features aren't even available
from phone company, like "simultaneous ring". With this feature,
a client calls one and your business phone, cell phone, and home
phone all ring at the same time.As a business owner you have to
wear a lot of hats at once and it is unlikely you will be tied to a
desk all the time. What this means for you is that you can still get
those important calls when you're not at you home office.
